Results from Exciting 2011 USTA Baton Twirling Nationals

The 2011 U.S. National Baton Twirling Championships were full of thrilling performances, good sportsmanship and new twirling friendships! This important annual twirling competition was held by the United States Twirling Association (USTA). About 600 baton twirling athletes from 25 states competed at the Jack Stephens Center at the University of Arkansas-Little Rock from July 11-16, 2011

“We saw hundreds of talented, dedicated athletes pursuing their personal best during the championships,” said USTA President Mark Nash. “Their inspiring performances were a tribute to the time and effort that they and their coaches and families put into this demanding sport.”

Other highlights of the baton twirling competition included a visit by the First Lady of Arkansas, Ginger Beebe, who congratulated the athletes on their accomplishments and encouraged them to continue to live healthy, active lifestyles and be good role models for their friends and families.

Former University of Arkansas wide receiver DJ Williams also visited the twirling championships to cheer on fellow Sullivan Award finalist Karrissa Wimberley. Both were top five finalists for the prestigious Sullivan Award, which recognizes the nation’s top amateur athlete.

During baton twirling nationals, USTA also recognized four outstanding coaches. Barbara Babb, coach of the Spurettes of Louisiana, was honored as Festival Coach of the Year for bringing the most beginner and intermediate teams to the championships. Karen Ogden, coach of KOS of Louisiana, received the National Coach of the Year award for bringing the most advanced teams to the championships. She also received the Team Choreography Award for excellence in team choreography.

Savannah Miller and Karrissa Wimberley were interviewed by local TV coverage

The Inspiring Performance Award was presented to Savannah Miller of Missouri and her coach Karrissa Wimberley of Florida, for Miller’s exciting, no-drop performances in the Solo and 2-Baton competition.

Among the national competitors were members of U.S. International Cup Team, who were selected a year ago to represent the U.S. in the 2011 World Baton Twirling Federation International Cup competition, going on right now in Jacksonville, Florida. They will be competing with more than 400 of the best baton twirlers from around the world.
