Fire Batons ~ Some Basic Considerations

July 8th, 2009 · 3 Comments · Fire!

Are you a fire baton twirler? If so, you already know that fire performance is a real crowd pleaser!  Twirling fire batons in a football halftime show is especially effective, as these novelty twirling batons are visible from a distance and lend themselves well to nighttime twirling.

If you are considering giving fire twirling a try, here are a few basics to keep in mind:

Fire batons require at least an intermediate twirling skill level. The twirls that are performed need not be very difficult, but it is important to have a good awareness of safety and safe handling.

Keep the fire baton moving, or hold the baton “dead stick” in horizontal positions well away from your body. Remember that if you stop the baton in a vertical position that the lower flame will be reaching upward toward your arm.

Focus on handling that involves contact with the middle of the baton shaft. Baton tricks such as full hand twirls, figure 8’s, 2 hand front spins, whips, large flourishes, and large passes are ideal for fire baton twirling. Simple flips and higher aerials are also good fire baton moves. These twirls will also read well from a distance and be especially impressive. Remember that you don’t want to slide to the end of the baton for an end swing…that end will be hot!

Develop and practice your fire baton routine with the baton unlit. Become very familiar with the weight and feel of your fire baton. Rehearse your routine at least a couple of times with the fire baton lit. Plenty of practice and preparation will help you to perform with relaxed confidence and without any surprises.

Become informed about fire baton safety principles. Never twirl your fire baton alone, or in very windy conditions.  Use a fire baton metal case specifically designed to extinguish and cool your baton.

Fire baton twirling is exciting, fun, and super effective in performance. Enjoy the preparation and enjoy the audience reaction!
