Humboldt Juggling Festival 2009

March 26th, 2009 · No Comments · Juggling, Spinning, Object Manipulation

I’m a twirler at heart, but I also juggle. I actually learned to juggle 3 batons and 3 balls from my mom and baton teacher, Patsy Hamilton. She had learned from her baton instructor, Robert Olmstead, who had a background in vaudeville.

I began juggling in earnest 7 years ago at the 2nd Annual Humboldt Juggling Festival. I was living in Arcata, California and was amazed to find this talented community of fun-loving jugglers in such a small town. I’ve gone to many juggling festivals meanwhile, and just attended the 2009 Humboldt Juggling Festival. Here are some videos that show the fun!

Most juggling festivals have “Games” that are open to everyone and feature quirky, silly, and oddball skills related to juggling. Jordan Campbell (above) won the Club Collecting game. Watch him as he methodically gathers an armload of 70 juggling clubs! Jordan is from Oakland, CA, is part of a Fire Arts Performance group called the Vulcan Crew, and often passes clubs with us at the Castro Valley Jugglers Association.

The Human Wheelbarrow Juggling Race requires cooperation, coordination, strength, and big smiles!

This was the Finals of Wet Soap Juggling game. It doesn’t last long, but it made that end of the gym smell great!

And this is a typical view of action in the gym at a juggling festival. This was Sunday morning, and the mood was relaxed, low key, yet still festive.

Juggling is a fantastic crossover skill for baton twirlers to pursue. It comes quickly for twirlers who already have such a sense of throwing and catching. Of course, the sport of baton twirling already has many competitive 3 baton twirlers who display phenomenal juggling skills that are ultra difficult!
