USTA Western Regional Baton Twirling Championships Just Held

June 28th, 2009 · 3 Comments · Baton Competitions and Contests

Baton twirling athletes from throughout California, Oregon, and Washington recently gathered at the the USTA Western Regional Baton Twirling Championships.  This annual twirling competition was held in Hayward, California in the beautiful gym at Cal State University East Bay. Twirl team and dance twirl team events, as well baton twirling freestyle events were held on Saturday, June 20.  I attended the next day to watch the solo, 2-baton, and 3-baton competitions.  So many of the performances reflected the hours of training and commitment of these dedicated athletes!  It was exciting to see the difficult, creative, and complex routines, particularly in the 2-baton and 3-baton events.

The weekend was a wonderful opportunity to spend some time with my colleague and friend, Shanon Barker of Stites Performing Arts Center.  Shanon is a baton coach in Oregon and her dance twirl team, Kelly’s Circus Shadows, competed in the championships.

I was unexpectedly asked to present the awards to the winning solo, 2-baton, and 3-baton athletes.  I was honored and delighted!

Kudos to the USTA California Baton Council, and to the participants and organizers from throughout California, Oregon, and Washington (as well as out-of-the-region visiting athletes) for combining efforts to create these successful championships!

Shanon taught me dance and baton twirling many years ago. Her faith in me has lasted over 25 years. She taught me then how to be a teacher, mentor, and friend. I only wish I lived closer to her so she could teach my daughter to dance and dream. She is an awesome inspiration .

I couldn’t agree with you more, Pam. I love Shanon! How fortunate that she was your teacher for so many years. And now those you come into contact with get to benefit from those gifts! Thanks for your comment : )

I am looking for one or two people to twirl in front of our Piedmont Community Band on July 4th and was hoping to find someone in the Oakland,CA area who would be willing to volunteer and enjoy our parade with us on that day at noon time. We won’t have our normal twirler this year. There is only one practice on the evening of July 2nd.
    Thank you, Jane
